Unfortunately for most electronics retailers, customers think because you sell electronics means that you know how to fix them. Although it’s important not to let their demands for help swamp you, there are some things that older customers in particular would benefit from knowing about what they just bought. How to free up phone space is one of them.

Aside from a dead battery, one of the most annoying parts of owning a smartphone is running out of storage on the phone. Inevitably, it always seems to happen at the very worst time. Fortunately, there are a number of ways to free up space—many of them aren’t necessarily apparent to the average user.

Delete the Apps You Don’t Use

Apps take up space, even when they aren’t being used. If you haven’t played Words with Friends in more than six months, it’s probably not worth keeping on your phone taking up space.

Clear Caches of the Apps You Do Use

The apps you use on a regular basis store information. Although this can help them run more efficiently, it ends up taking up space that you may not be able to afford. This is especially helpful with WhatsApp and internet browsers: they store information and pictures from past messages and searches. Once you’ve sent that picture or done that search, you don’t need to save it anymore.

Clear Navigation Data

Your maps app may store data from all the many trips you’ve used it for. This isn’t necessarily true for cross-country trips, either. It also includes when you put in the address for the new dentist to find their office, or when you looked for a different route the last time you got stuck in traffic. Clearing navigation data is a great way to free up space.

Delete Old Downloads

If you download things to your phone on a regular basis—pictures, files, memes, videos—find your downloads file and delete it. Generally, those items are downloaded for a specific reason; once that happens, you generally don’t need them anymore.

Clean Out Old Pictures and Videos

One of the great advantages of digital pictures is being able to take multiple shots to get the perfect one. How many of us remember to go back in and delete the crappy pics afterward? Probably not many. This can be one of the easiest ways to free up data. It’s also something that’s easy to do on the bus or train or while you’re watching TV. In addition, you can save the pics and videos you do want to keep to an account in the Cloud or download them to a hard drive and free up even more space.
